East Africa Safari Expeditions - Travel Tips

All visitors are required to carry a passport that is valid for six months beyond the intended length of stay. Depending on nationality and country of origin, a visa may be obtained on arrival at Nairobi or Mombasa airports, and at Namanga Gate on the Tanzania/Kenya border. However it is advisable to obtain visa in advance. Visas cost US$ 50 and valid for three months. There should be at least 2 blank visa pages in your passport for endorsement of a visa. Visa to Uganda is $50 where as to Tanzania is between $50 & $100. Some nationalities do not require visas.

The shilling is the currency used in the major East African community member countries although the value depends on individual member state. In Kenya , its Kenya shillings with denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20 and 40 in coins and 50, 100, 200, 500 and the largest being 1000 all in the form of notes. For visitors to Kenya, the US dollar is widely accepted in hotels and lodges as well as to pay for a safari or for car hire & rental. However it’s a major problem if you wish to use US dollars , Pounds or Euros to purchase from local restaurants or even supermarkets. The exchange rates are as follows although its advisable to check with the local dailies on the exchange rates of the day. 1 USD = 80 Kshs 1 Euro = 105 Kshs 1 GBP = 125 Kshs Travellers checks are possible to cash only in some very few forex bureaus, but at a lower rate.

Vaccination against yellow fever is not mandatory in Kenya but its very recommended. For Uganda and Tanzania it’s a requirement for one to have a vaccination certificate. Anyone entering Kenya from or Via a yellow fever known or declared zone must be in possession of an international recognized yellow fever vaccination certificate. If you plan to travel to East Africa, its advisable to take anti malaria medication at least start your course one week before you leave home. Please remember while purchasing the malaria prophylactics, tell your doctor you intend to travel to Kenya. The Kenyan ministry of health has banned the use of Chloroquine combinations and instead it recommends the use of Mefloquine ( Lariam / Mefliam ) or Doxycycline. Many travelers that I have come across use either Lariam ( weekly ) or Malarone ( daily ). Please consult your doctor as to which is suitable for you and the actual correct dosage.
