Most Tanzania itineraries run Serengeti → Ngorongoro → done. But a few hours north lies one of the most surreal landscapes in Africa — Lake Natron, a crimson soda lake at the foot of an active volcano, and the most important breeding site on Earth for East Africa's 2.5 million lesser flamingos. This is the trip seasoned travellers come back for.
Lake Natron — the red soda lake
Natron's high alkalinity gives it eerie red and orange hues and a crust of soda that few creatures can survive. Yet it's a paradise for flamingos, which nest on its islands in their millions. Walking the volcanic shoreline at dawn, with flamingos massed against the Rift wall, feels like another planet.
Ol Doinyo Lengai — the Mountain of God
Towering over Natron is Ol Doinyo Lengai, the Maasai's sacred "Mountain of God" and the only active carbonatite volcano on Earth — it erupts the world's coolest, blackest lava. The climb is serious: you start around midnight, ascend a steep ash cone through the night, and reach the crater rim at sunrise, with the Rift Valley and Lake Natron glowing below. It's demanding and unforgettable — for fit, adventurous travellers only.
Ngare Sero Waterfalls — the hidden oasis
A short distance away, the Ngare Sero gorge offers the perfect cool-down: you wade up a narrow volcanic canyon along a clear river to a series of hidden waterfalls and pools. After the heat of Natron, it's pure relief.
Cultural side: the Maasai
This region is Maasai heartland. Many camps are Maasai-owned, and a visit supports the community directly. Ancient hominin footprints at Engare Sero — among the largest sets of early-human prints ever found — add a remarkable archaeological layer.
When to go
- Flamingos: present much of the year; breeding concentrations peak in the drier months.
- Lengai climb: best in the dry season (June–October, Dec–Feb) — the ash is more stable and skies clearer. The climb is weather-dependent and should never be attempted without a guide.
- Days are hot; nights (especially on Lengai) are cold. Pack for both.
How it fits an itinerary
Lake Natron sits between the Serengeti/Ngorongoro highlands and the Kenyan border, so it pairs naturally with a Northern Circuit safari as a 2–3 day add-on: Natron flamingos + Ngare Sero falls + (optional) Lengai climb.
Go with people who know it
This is remote, rugged country — water, navigation, the volcano, and community access all need local expertise. On SafariEA, the Lake Natron, Ngare Sero Waterfalls, and Ol Doinyo Lengai experiences are run by verified operators, so you get the adventure safely and your money reaches the Maasai communities who call this place home.
