Both Tarangire and Lake Manyara sit on the road between Arusha and the Ngorongoro/Serengeti highlands, so most Northern Circuit itineraries include at least one. If you only have time for one, here's how to choose.
Tarangire National Park — elephants & baobabs
Tarangire is famous for two things: enormous elephant herds (often 100+ at a time in the dry season) and ancient baobab trees dotting golden savanna. The Tarangire River draws huge concentrations of wildlife from June to October, when animals migrate in from the surrounding areas.
- Best for: elephants, big open landscapes, fewer crowds, classic savanna scenery
- Wildlife: elephant, lion, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, and 550+ bird species
- Size: large (2,850 km²) — room to roam, longer game drives
Lake Manyara National Park — variety in a small package
Manyara is compact but remarkably diverse: a groundwater forest, open grassland, the alkaline lake itself, and the dramatic Rift Valley escarpment as a backdrop. It's known for tree-climbing lions and vast flocks of flamingos on the lake.
- Best for: a half-day stop, birdlife, scenery variety, tree-climbing lions
- Wildlife: elephant, hippo, baboon troops, flamingos, and excellent birding
- Size: small (330 km²) — easy to cover in half a day

So which should you choose?
- Choose Tarangire if you love elephants, want big open spaces, and have a full day.
- Choose Manyara if you're short on time, love birds and scenery, or want an easy first-day warm-up before Ngorongoro.
- Do both if you can — they're close together and complement each other perfectly. Many travellers do Manyara as a half-day on the way in, then a full day in Tarangire.
Best time to visit
The dry season (June–October) is best for Tarangire's elephant spectacle. Manyara is rewarding year-round, with the green season (November–June) bringing the most birds and flamingos. Both pair naturally with Ngorongoro and the Serengeti on a 5–7 day Northern Circuit.
On SafariEA, you can book Tarangire (and the wider Northern Circuit) with a verified operator — real guides, clear USD pricing, and reserve-now-pay-by-transfer. Pair it with Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro for the complete experience.
